  16. 1. INTRODUCTION
  17.  
  18. ThemeFreak was designed to make theme creation as easy as possible,
  19. and the user-friendly interface makes the job simpler for those who
  20. are not experienced with computers and/or theme creation.

  23. 2. INSTALLING/UNINSTALLING
  24.  
  25. To install ThemeFreak, simply unzip the downloaded file to a temporary
  26. directory on your hard drive. (e.g c:\tfinstall). Then double-click the 
  27. setup.exe file in the temporary directory. Now just follow the steps
  28. in the install wizard. It is recommended that you stick to the defaults.
  29. If you do use the defaults, a folder named "ThemeFreak" should appear in your
  30. start menu. To run the program, click on the "ThemeFreak" link in this
  31. folder.
  32.  
  33. To uninstall ThemeFreak, click on the start button, go to "Settings", 
  34. and click on "Control Panel". Click on "Add/Remove Programs". 
  35. Select "ThemeFreak" from the list of programs, then click on the 
  36. "Add/Remove" button under the list. A confirmation screen will 
  37. popup, and clicking yes will totally remove ThemeFreak from your drive.

  40. 3. USING THE MENUS
  41.  
  42. (a) FILE MENU
  43.  
  44. The File Menu has three sub-sections, the first containing "New", and 
  45. "Open", the second with "Save", "Save As", and "Copy Files", and the
  46. last simply containing "Exit".
  47.  
  48. Clicking on "New" will prompt you to save the current theme. 
  49. "Yes" will open the saving screen before clearing and starting a new
  50. theme; "No" will Clear the current theme and start a new one without
  51. saving; and "Cancel" will return directly to the main screen without 
  52. clearing anything.
  53.  
  54. Clicking on "Open" will first prompt you to save, and will then 
  55. bring up a dialogue in which you can select the desired theme. Click
  56. "Open" and the Theme will be opened. If some of the files could not
  57. be found, the spaces will be left blank for you to change.
  58.  
  59. Clicking on "Save" will bring up a dialogue for you to choose what 
  60. to name your theme file (if you haven't already saved it once), and 
  61. where you'd like to save it. When ThemeFreak is done saving, a 
  62. message will popup asking if it should copy all the files to the 
  63. output directory (See "Help" on the "Options" Menu).

  65. Clicking on "Save As" does the same as "Save", but it will always 
  66. prompt you for a filename.

  68. Clicking on "Copy Files" will copy all of the files to the selected
  69. output directory (See "Help" on the "Options" Menu).

  72. (b) OPTIONS MENU
  73.  
  74. There are three options in the Options Menu: "Output Directory", "File
  75. Options" and "View Source".
  76.  
  77. Clicking on "Output Directory" will bring up a dialogue with a directory
  78. listing. This is where you choose the default directory to which your
  79. themes will be saved. Each time you save a theme, a directory is created 
  80. within your default Output Directory, and given the name of your theme. This
  81. will be the directory to which all your files will be copied after saving.
  82. PLEASE NOTE: when selecting the output directory, make sure that you
  83. double click on the folder you want, and the icon to its left shows
  84. that it is open!

  86. Clicking on "File Options" will bring up a dialogue with three sections, 
  87. each containing various options.
  88.  
  89. The first section determines what OS your theme will be produced for: Win95,
  90. Win98, or both.
  91. ThemeFreak defaults to the "2-Way Compatible" option, which creates a theme 
  92. with information for both Windows 95 and 98 themes. This option is handy 
  93. for the internet, as both Windows versions should be able to handle themes
  94. created in this manner.
  95. Selecting "Windows 95" means that the "My Documents Icon" on the second tab 
  96. will not be saved, and the "New Mail" sound on the fourth tab won't be saved
  97. either. Selecting "Windows 98" means that both of these *will* be included.

  99. The second section entitled "Rename" allows you to control which files
  100. are renamed (to the file name you give your theme) as they are copied to 
  101. the Output Directory, while leaving your original source files untouched.
  102. Selecting the various groups of the theme in this area allows you to rename 
  103. only those files you want renamed. For instance, selecting the ICONS group 
  104. will rename all the icons to the title you have given the theme in the first 
  105. tab, and add the function name - for example, "This Theme My Computer.ico"). 
  106. This function enables you to choose NOT to rename, perhaps, your cursors, 
  107. while renaming your sound files if you so wish.
  108.  
  109. The third section presently has just one option, "Convert BMP to JPG". 
  110. A bitmap is a much larger file (space-wise) than a Jpeg. This option is 
  111. handy when the theme is going to be distributed on the Internet, as 
  112. the size of the zipped file will be much smaller.
  113.  
  114. Clicking on "View Source" will first prompt you to save the theme,
  115. and then to copy the files to the output directory. Although it is
  116. necessary that you save the file, you do not have to copy the files, so
  117. if you click no, you will still be able to view the source. If you 
  118. modify and Save the source, you have to open the theme again by 
  119. clicking File/Open and selecting your theme.

  122. 4. SCHEMES
  123.  
  124. Schemes are an easy way to keep a theme's colors, or a collection of 
  125. sounds, icons, or cursors, stored for quick retrieval. The schemes
  126. are stored in a sub-directory under ThemeFreak's program directory,
  127. called "Schemes". You can save Icon/Sound/Cursor and Color schemes by 
  128. clicking on the "Save Scheme" on the appropriate tab. It is recommended 
  129. that you save the file in this default directory, though not essential.
  130. Themes schemes can be loaded at any time by clicking on "Load Scheme"
  131. in the appropriate tab.

  134. 5. HOW TO CREATE A THEME
  135.  
  136. This is a step by step guide to creating a theme with ThemeFreak:
  137.  
  138. First ensure that you have set up all of your options correctly. 
  139. (See "Help" on the "Options" Menu.)
  140.  
  141.   i. To start a new theme, click File/New
  142.   This will clear everything and prepare for a new theme.
  143.   
  144.   ii. The first tab, entitled "NAME", is where you will record the 
  145. details about your theme, and about yourself. It is essential that 
  146. you enter a name for your theme. The other information is simply 
  147. there for your convenience; it is added to the text of the Theme 
  148. file but is not essential to the theme.
  149.  
  150. When a new theme is started, the program enters your details which 
  151. were used in the last theme created (or reads the information from 
  152. the computers defaults), and clears all other information. You must 
  153. enter a name for your theme - this is necessary to the file renaming 
  154. process when the individual components are copied into your theme's 
  155. directory.
  156.  
  157.   iii. The second tab, entitled "DESKTOP ICONS", allows you to select
  158. the icons that will appear on the desktop. (My Computer etc.)
  159. Each icon has its own preview and change button. Clicking on change
  160. will bring up a dialogue for selecting your icons. Alternatively, you
  161. can also choose "Load Scheme" to utilise previously created schemes. 
  162. (See item 4 above, "Schemes".)

  164.   ix. The third tab, entitled "WALLPAPER/SCREEN SAVER", enables you to
  165. select the wallpaper for your theme. Clicking on "Change Wallpaper" will
  166. bring up a dialogue; you can select either a Bitmap or a Jpeg as your 
  167. wallpaper. You can select the default for the way the computer handles
  168. your wallpaper in the Dropdown box under the button - "Stretch" resizes 
  169. the image to fit the screen, "Tile" repeats the images until the whole 
  170. background is covered, and "Centre" leaves the image at its original
  171. size and places it in the middle of the screen.

  173. Note: The preview does NOT show the Style! 
  174.  
  175. Click on "Full Screen" to see the image at its full original size. 
  176. Click ESCAPE to return to ThemeFreak.
  177.  
  178. The screen saver can also be chosen on this tab by clicking "Change
  179. Screen Saver". There is a preview button which enables you to see the 
  180. screen saver before saving the theme. Note: The Text Box under the 
  181. "Change Screen Saver" button simply displays the screen saver's name.

  183.   x. The fourth tab, entitled "SOUNDS/CURSORS", has two drop down menus,
  184. one for the sounds, and one for the cursors. Select the sound you want
  185. to change in the first drop down menu, and click "Change" to select the
  186. sound file. There is a play option under the "Change" button, to enable
  187. you to hear the selected sound. Changing Cursors is done in the same way, 
  188. and when a cursor is selected, a preview appears under the "Change" 
  189. button. Again, schemes can be used here (see Item 4 above). Note that for
  190. animated cursors, only the first frame of the animation is previewed.

  192.   xi. The fifth tab, entitled "COLORS", is where you select the colors for
  193. your theme. You can load a previously created color Scheme (see Item 4 
  194. above), or make a new one here. 
  195.  
  196. Ticking "Windows Default" will leave all the settings at the 
  197. Windows defaults. To change the colors, you must ensure that this is not 
  198. ticked. 
  199.  
  200. There are two ways to select the item for which you want to change the color:
  201. the first is to use the drop down menu, and the second is to click on the 
  202. item itself in the preview area. By moving the sliders (or adjusting the 
  203. RGB numbers) you can change the color of the selected item. (NOTE: Not 
  204. all the minor items are previewed, but the color can be seen in the block 
  205. at the top right corner of the preview area.)

  207. Clicking on "Wallpaper" brings up a full screen picture of the selected 
  208. wallpaper, and wherever you click on the fullscreen image, ThemeFreak will 
  209. automatically pick up that color and insert it for you into the color item
  210. you are working with. Pushing escape or clicking on the words at the bottom 
  211. right will cancel the fullscreen preview.

  213.   xii. The sixth tab, entitled "LOGOS", contains information that stores 
  214. the so-called "Logo" screens for starting up and shutting down Windows. 
  215. This option is rare in theme creating, and it is only compatibable with a 
  216. few other theme programs. Programs that are not compatible will simply 
  217. ignore these logos. Your logos can be changed by selecting the screen type
  218. (Starting Windows, Waiting, or Shut Down) from the drop down list
  219. and clicking "Change". You can utilise both ".SYS" files, and ".BMP", 
  220. however they must have the resolution of 320x400 pixels and 256 colors.

  223. next section of the help file.

  226. 6. SAVING AND DISTRIBUTION
  227.  
  228. Firstly, follow the instructions above on how to save and copy the files.
  229. After a subdirectory has been created in your output directory, it
  230. is recommended that you compress all the files in this directory
  231. by using a zipping program such as Winzip. This zip file can then be 
  232. uploaded to the internet, as a ready-to-use theme!
